Where is the Future of Denim?

Where is the Future of Denim

Since its birth, denim has been a fixture of fashion with its unique features. But the popularity of denim is slipping as new fabrics and technologies continue to emerge and major brands struggle to keep up with the rapidly changing fashion climate. In this battle, traditional denim brands are losing out to fast fashion brands that can offer more fashionable denim products at more competitive prices and at a faster pace.

In addition, as the concept of a sporty lifestyle has become more entrenched in recent years, the popularity of sports brands has skyrocketed, so that light and travel theme is more appealing to consumers than chunky denim fabrics. The invention of denim originated from the labor needs of miners, so it is thicker, wear-resistant, and dirt-resistant, and the color is mainly indigo blue. Classic denim garments are more masculine in appearance and temperament, resulting its limit in reflecting the increasingly diverse and softer stylistic expressions of customers.

The last large-scale fading of denim was before Levi’s® introduced engineering denim in 1999. The brand introduced a new denim silhouette that reignited consumer fondness. This explains the importance of the denim industry embracing the latest trends and innovations in terms of performance, appearance and sustainability, as only constant innovation can remain relevant to changing consumer demands. Nowadays, as the influence of sports and technology is blending in with our daily clothing design, fabric and silhouette design of denim need have a deeper communication with fashion, keeping moving forward in inheritance and development, to meet the new requirements of people for wearing comfort, functionality, fashion and so on.

New denim

Stretchy denim

Generally speaking, there is a positive relationship between denim comfort and its elasticity:  the better the elasticity is, the more comfortable denim is. However, if the elasticity is too great, it can also cause the fabric’s failure to return to its original shape. Therefore, there is a new type of stretchy denim woven with double spandex yarns, which has a higher elasticity and resilience than denim made with single spandex yarn. Not only does the new denim eliminate the problems of broken threads in ordinary denim, but also has a more comfortable wearing experience.

Lightweight denim

Lightweight denim is blended with temperature-controlled fibers and pure cotton. It improves the traditional denim’s heavy twill weave method, as a consequence of which, its weight is between 200 and 300 g/m2, only about half of that of heavy denim. In addition to lightweight, it owns other advantages like softness and the function of moisture absorption and perspiration.

Knitted denim

Knitted denim is made of knitted fabric and dyed in denim style, with fine texture, drapability and breathability.

Functional denim

In recent years, a lot of functional denim fabrics has sprung up, which meets the requirements of people on the function of clothing. For instance, waterproof denim, antibacterial denim, sun-resistant denim, anti-mildew denim, etc., greatly improve the added value of denim and provide us with more choices.

As a companion to denim, SBS metal zipper also has not stopped its pace of innovation. From the teeth color, tape fabric, function to slider design, SBS metal zipper is able to add more fashion elements and highlights for your denim clothing.
