PIN is the component that is mounted at the bottom end of a separating zipper, which is accompanied by the pin and box mechanism rather than the fixed bottom stopper attached to a closed end zipper.
Pins play an essential role in fully zipping up or down the zipper halves. Although they are very tiny devices, pins come in many configurations. We will probe into the classification of pins in the post.
There is not any technical degree required to learn about them. However, it is advisable to gain a basic understanding and factor into these tiny pieces before purchase in case the zippers are not tailed to your specific requirements.
Classification Based on the Manufacturing Material
Based on the manufacturing material, pins can be categorized into:
- Zin alloy pins
- POM pins
The first type of pins which is primarily manufactured out of zinc alloy is mainly adopted for metal zippers and nylon coil zippers.
POM pins are manufactured through injection molding. POM is the same material that is used for producing the teeth elements of delrin zippers. These pins are mainly adopted for delrin zippers and nylon coil zippers, though few of them can also be found on metal zippers. When POM pins are attached to nylon coil zippers, these zippers are referred to as nylon coil zippers with plastic stoppers.
Classification Based on Functioning
Based on functioning, pins can be classified in accordance with the types of zippers.
- One way separating zippers: The pin and insert box are installed on the different sides of a zipper, forming a secure connection with the single slider passing along them.
- Two way separating zippers: There are two pins mounted onto these zippers that accommodate easy movement. They are referred to as mobile pin and fixing pin respectively, accompanied by 2 zipper sliders.
- Easy release zippers: The pins used for these zippers differ slightly from the regular pins in structure. They are mainly used for the sportswear, allowing easy and quick removal from the wearers.
Classification Based on the Handed Version
Based on whether they are attached on the right or left side of a zipper, pins can be grouped into:
- Left-sided pins
- Right-sided pins

How to Care for Pins?
When a pin slides into the insert box, they will form a complete stop mechanism. Users shall make sure the pin is inserted securely into the box before you move the pull tab. If the box does not align the pin correctly, the slider will end up sliding up only side of the zipper tape, with the other side remaining stuck. Consequently, the zipper will not operate correctly.
