10 Factors To Consider When Purchasing Garment Buttons

garment buttons

Buttons are not only a simple fastening device, but can also be a great accessory to enhance the aesthetic of your garment. Choosing the right type of garment buttons that will fit both your aesthetic and functional needs can be difficult with all the different types and options available.

So in this guide, we will discuss ten different factors you should consider before purchasing your buttons of choice.

1.Type of Garment
Before anything else, we should first consider which type of garment the buttons will be attached to, because arguably this is the most important step. Formal clothing will require different buttons compared to say, a wedding dress. On the other hand, children’s clothing will also have different needs compared to adults’ casual wear.

There are many factors that must be considered based on the types of garment among other factors.

  • They can have a different amount of pressure and stress.
  • They all have their own aesthetic norms.
  • They have different life expectancies.
  • Some types will demand easier cleaning methods.

2.Type of Fabric
Different fabrics have different weights, thicknesses, stability and colors, and we should take these factors into account when choosing the type of buttons.

With thicker fabrics such as leather, it will be harder to securely attach a flat button. We should also consider the fact that thinner buttons will break easily when sewn too tightly. On lighter fabrics such as cashmere or chiffon, for example, we should avoid large and heavy buttons, because they can stretch the fabric and ruin the aesthetic.

What will be the function of the button? Most of the time, it will be a simple fastening purpose.

However, that’s not always the case, sometimes buttons can be used for purely aesthetic reasons. For example, buttons can be used to attach accessories, or another piece of garment. In many cases, even the button itself can act as a focal point of the whole design.

On the other hand, a certain garment may require specific button type for functional purpose. For example, garments intended for formal use will need a simpler, more practical button with less color and shape variations.

4.Style or Aesthetic
The type of button you choose should suit the overall aesthetic of your design. When you started your project, you often have an overall feel and aesthetic in mind. The buttons should act as a tool to bring that picture to life.

Do the type of garment require a certain button shape or color to enhance its fashion aesthetic? If your design is colorful and feminine, you should choose buttons with shape and color that can emphasize that overall feel. Using buttons made of coral shells to enhance a colorful summer dress is a common example.

5.Type/Classification of Button
There are many different types of buttons available based on different classifications that should be put into consideration. Our previous guide on clothing buttons classifications can help you in this aspect.

6.Attachment/Installation Method
Different button types may require a different installation method. Take flat button and shank button for example. You can easily machine-sew a flat button to attach it to various types of fabrics. Yet, shank buttons must be hand-sewn, so the attachment will require more time and effort.

If your project is time-sensitive, you might consider a button type that is easier/faster to attach. Also, the difficulty in installation might affect the installation cost.

Buttons are available in many different sizes, and you should choose the right size depending on your needs.

For example, if you want the button to act as a focal point, you might want to choose a relatively big size. In other cases such as on a fur coat, you might not want a button that is too small, because it will be buried beneath the fabric.

Your color selection will be mainly based on your aesthetic needs. Thankfully, virtually all colors are available with the different button types. You should consider the quality of the coloring finish, because if it wears off easily with washing, it can ruin the fabric.

9.Special Requirements
There are several other considerations you might want to make before purchasing buttons.

  • Salt spray test to detect corrosion, especially useful with metal buttons.
  • Is the button machine washable or not?
  • Physical durability. Depending on your fabric choice, you might need a more durable button.

Depending on your needs, you might require specially customized buttons to fit your design, or to cater to a specific function. While this can be relatively costly, it can save a lot of time and money otherwise required to mix-and-match all the different choices.
